Alton Zamzow

February 5, 1937 - December 30, 2021

Alton Walter Zamzow, affectionately known as a loving son, brother, husband, father, and Poppy, went to be with The Lord on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at the age of 84. Alton was born on February 5, 1937, to Walter and Norma Stridde Zamzow in Three Rivers, Texas. It is never an easy task to capture someone in speech, as words fall short of capturing someone’s true essence. In this instance, they fall so far below the mark it is almost futile to try. I am going to ask everyone here to sit in silence for a moment to remember how this man touched each of our lives in so many ways. Alton was a generous, loving, selfless, hardworking, and God-fearing man. He opened and ran Zamzow’s Grocery & Deli in Three Rivers for 52 years. Daily Alton would open at the store at 7 am after asking Susan, his wife of 38 years, “How are you doing today?” and leaving her a diet coke he prepared for her. Alton never went a day without verbally letting Susan know he loved her. He worked long hours at his store to serve others. During hunting season, you could find him there as late at 10 or 11 o’clock at night processing meat for others. He often gave groceries and meat to those in need. Alton was a true Christian man that loved God and his family. He served as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church of Three Rivers, taught a RA class at the church, was also a member of the Three Rivers Lions Club, the Three Rivers Booster Club, and an avid supporter of the Three Rivers Bulldogs in all sports. His boys fondly remember their dad cheering/coaching them on from the stands. He also enjoyed taking his boys hunting, fishing at the coast and water skiing at Mathis Lake. Later in life he enjoyed taking Jeremy to UIL events and watching his nieces and nephews at sporting events. Alton was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mable Zamzow Thiele. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan Kennedy Zamzow; his sons, Steve (Kerry) Zamzow and Dean (Sara) Zamzow; stepchildren, Tommy (Peggy) House, Melanie House, Sara House, and Jeremy Pape; brothers, Curtis (Jeanette) Zamzow and Arlen (Angie) Zamzow; sister, Nelda (Freddie) Franke. Alton also leaves behind nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 2, 2022, from 5-7 p.m. at Roberson Funeral Home in Three Rivers and the funeral service will be performed Monday, January 3, 2022, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Three Rivers. Burial will be scheduled at a later date. Services entrusted to Roberson Funeral Home of Three Rivers.
